Great News! The building permit for the Peerless Road CAFO expired on Nov. 30, 2018. It appears that the owner has abandoned his plan to build a CAFO on this property. If the property owner decides to try again to build a CAFO on this lot, they would need to obtain all new permits which would be subject to more restrictive zoning regulations introduced by the county in 2017.
We will have a meeting in January so that we can all "toast" our successful efforts to stop this particular CAFO from being built. At that time we would like to talk about where the Protectors of the St. Martin River would like to go from here. There are possibilities of changing the CAFO permitting process, looking to further improve the quality of the St. Martin River, coordinating with other groups on the eastern shore and pursuing legislation affecting our air and water. We have raised $3080.00 to fund any actions we might have needed to take in opposition to this CAFO. We have spent $496.18 to take out ads in the local papers, pay for our P.O. Box and other minor activities. This leaves us a balance of $2583.82, which is not insignificant and we need to decide what to do with this money? We will address this in a future email and at our meeting in January. In the meantime, thank you to everyone for all your efforts on this -- from letters and emails you wrote, to meetings you attended, to keeping this proposed CAFO both in the newspapers and conversations with your neighbors. This success is a result of all of us working together and making a difference! Thank you! Joe Jankowski Director Protectors of the St Martin River
